The
Spice Box / Lou Jane Temple

This is the first
book in a new series by Temple . A mystery set in Civil War New
York City where the Irish immigrants are often work as servants
to the wealthy. Bridget Heaney, a young but talented cook, is
happy with her new job with the Gold Family. She is planning a
wonderful debut meal including with her "light as a feather"
rolls". Her mid-morning work is interrupted when she is shocked
to find a body inside the kitchen's dough box. The body is the
family's youngest son Seth who has been shot. Bridget and Mr.
Gold become amateur detectives exploring NYC's rougher side as
well as using their Irish and Jewish connections to solve the
mystery of Seth's death. A great mix of characters and the historical
insights make this new series a treat for all mystery readers.

I also enjoyed The Spice Box. It was my first Temple novel but
it certainly will not be the last. Especially liked the historical
part that included stock exchange and how it worked, clothing,
menus, recipes, etc.
